Amr ibn Shurahbil reported: When the prohibition of wine was yet to be declared, Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, “O Allah, give us a clear explanation of wine.” So Allah revealed the verse, “They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin,” (2:219) Umar was called and it was recited to him, then he said, “O Allah, give us a clear explanation of wine.” So Allah revealed the verse, “O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated,” (4:43) Umar was called and it was recited him, then he said, “O Allah, give us a clear explanation of wine.” So Allah revealed the verse, “Satan only wants to cause animosity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling and to divert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not abstain?” (5:91) Umar was called and it was recited to him, then he said, “We have abstained.”

عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ فَنَزَلَتْ الَّتِي فِي الْبَقَرَةِ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنْ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ الْآيَةَ فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ فَنَزَلَتْ الَّتِي فِي النِّسَاءِ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنَ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ فَنَزَلَتْ الَّتِي فِي الْمَائِدَةِ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمْ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِفَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ انْتَهَيْنَا انْتَهَيْنَا
