Zaid ibn Thabit reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “Whoever makes the world his more important matter, Allah will confound his affairs and make poverty appear before his eyes and he will not get anything from the world except what has been decreed for him. Whoever makes the Hereafter his most important matter, Allah will settle his affairs and make him content in his heart and the world will come to him although he does not want it.”

Narrated Aisha (Radi-Allahu 'anha):

A lady along with her two daughters came to me asking (for some alms), but
she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she
divided it between her two daughters, and did not eat anything herself, and
then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa
Sallam) came in and I informed him about this story. He said, "Whoever is
put to trial by these daughters and he treats them generously (with
benevolence) then these daughters will act as a shield for him from
Hell-Fire." (See Hadith No. 24, Vol. 8).
